Online Review: TVMost Ten Big Ging Cook Gum Cook Awards Distribution 毛記電視十大勁曲金曲分獎典禮

TVMost Ten Big Ging Cook Gum Cook Awards Distribution (毛記電視十大勁曲金曲分獎典禮) is a new style music awards ceremony in a new media, TVMost (毛記電視). On 1 January 2016, the first year of this ceremony was held in Queen Elizabeth Stadium and was broadcasting through YouTube channel. Different from the main stream music awards ceremonies, all of the awarded songs are rewrote from the pop music in Hong Kong and most of those songs are written to satirise and criticise  about recent social issues. TVMost is a new media television channel which broadcasts through the internet. It is a precedent in Hong Kong that a new media held a music awards ceremony which has caught much attention in the society. The main reason is that TVMost “dares” to speak out the most unfair things and the greatest mistakes of the government by humorous way, it is something the mainstream media would not do.

There are some collective memory elements in the TVMost Ten Big Ging Cook Gum Cook Awards Distribution. For instance, the first of the greatest ten songs in the ceremony, ATV Forever (亞視永恒). It is rewrote from a pop song, Love is Forever (愛是永恒), but the lyric is about why so ridiculous that ATV was still remaining even there was less and less audience of ATV. For example, there are some verses like “loop到下世紀 仲未埋尾 亞視永恒 執笠既係你 (it’s still looping until the next century never end, ATV is forever which won’t close down)” ATV is a collective memory of Hong Kong people even it had been so decadent in recent years. People are still missing the good shows of ATV but they do not want it to loop again. Like a verse of the lyric is “有朱慧珊 仲有個何B 仲有宮雪花 仲會掟壽包”, it is counting the famous artists and the memorable fragments of ATV. It shows that ATV is a collective memory of Hong Kong people.

There is a song, called "The Real Hong Kong (真·香港地", performed by Gregory Charles Rivers (河國榮), who awarded as "The Most Favorite Male Singer of Hong Kong (香港區最受歡迎男歌星". In this song, there are some verses obviously conveying a message of cultural identity of Hong Kong. Like "各行各業 但係聽過同一首王傑 (No matter who you are, you must have listened to Dave Wang's songs)", it reflects that Wang’s songs were icon of Hong Kong which is a cultural identity of Hong Kong. Also, there is another example at the end of this song, like “係真香港人 當然會識英雄輝 (As a real Hong Konger, you must know who is Yaap Hung Fai)”. At this verse, it is sung about a hero or pride of Hong Kong, Yaap, who is the goalkeeper of Hong Kong Football Team and had saved the team many times. The rest of the lyric is enumerating the cultural icons of Hong Kong as well. In this ceremony, most of the awarded songs are similar to these two songs in cultural identity aspect.

Briefly put, from the above examples, it can be illustrated that cultural identity and collective memory of Hong Kong can be shown in TVMost Ten Big Ging Cook Gum Cook Awards Distribution. As a new media, TVMost would show more reality of Hong Kong than the main stream media.

  1. Dear Kan, The discussion of the two songs is related to cultural identity. However, this may be a bit confusing to a person who is not familiar with the presentation ceremony, which seems to be the "topic" of your review. That means that you need to make it clearer the subject of your discussion is the songs getting the awards but not the ceremony itself. In fact, there would be a lot to say if you only focus on the ceremony. Regarding the discussion of cultural identity, there is a tendency that only the lyrics are reiterated. Try to relate your discussion to the local cultural context so that you can enrich the discussion.
